Twelve elementary schools from Isabel I District Isabel, Leyte gathered to compete in the District Schools Press Conference (DSPC) which officially opened at Isabel Central School on Friday, 22 November 2024.
The DSPC started in the morning for the opening program where the District I Public Schools Supervisor, Mr. Guillermo S. Bande, Jr. gave her welcome message to all the participants and visitors. “This activity is one way of showing the writing and communication skills of our young journalists,” he said. The Specialist of External Affairs of PASAR and former executive director of PFI, Mr. Ruben P. Cajigas also gave his message as support to the academic competition.
According to him, journalism is not only about news writing but also one way of expressing the truth. In line with the Literacy Improvement in Math, English & Science (LIMES) program, PFI provided medals to the winners, transportation allowances to participating pupils in far flung schools, supported the snacks as well as the transportation and t-shirts of the winning pupils and coaches to the Area-level School Press Conference. He also said that PFI will try to continue supporting education related programs and projects of the local schools hoping LIMES will also continue to have the support of PASAR.
The contest proper started immediately right after the program and some 103 pupils from 12 elementary schools participated in the different journalism categories that were contested simultaneously such as News Writing, Feature Writing, Editorial Writing, Editorial Cartooning, SCITECH Writing, Sports Writing, Copy Reading and Headline Writing, Column Writing and Photo Journalism.
The activity ended with the awarding of winners of the different competitions. Isabel 1 DSPC was successfully concluded through the leadership of the Isabel I District Journalism Coordinator, Mrs. Maria Alma F. Baliber who also gave his closing message, according to her, the winners of this DSPC will compete to the Area Schools Press Conference (ASPC) on December 5 at Albuera, Leyte.
