PFI’s projects in education are geared towards helping address the challenges of local education particularly in the public sector. As our main thrusts, projects under education consist of various initiatives.
Improving Student’s Achievement through Better Environment in Learning (ISABEL)
The project helped build and/or repair classrooms, laboratories and libraries in the public schools in the different barangays in Isabel, Leyte. Through partnerships and multi-stakeholder approach, PFI is instrumental in building 16 DepEd standard size classrooms including a math laboratory and rehabilitation of 44 public classrooms and two libraries in the local public schools. The project also constructed new armchairs and tables and repaired several chairs for the primary grade pupils.
The project is seeking partnership with groups and individuals who may want to help in building and rebuilding of educational facilities specially in schools affected by Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda).
Scholarships and Partnership for A Child’s Education (SPACE)
Every child has the right to good education specially the poor, the orphans and those in difficult situations who are bright and deserving of help to complete at least their basic education. This is the backbone of PFI’s SPACE project. Annually, the foundation is supporting the primary, elementary, secondary and tertiary education of at least 50 poor and bright students from local communities. The support not only comes from the foundation but also from employees who sponsored, through the foundation, the schooling of children on an annual basis. The support is in the form of cash or in kind like school supplies, uniform, food allowance and others.
Under this are the following educational scholarships:
Adopt-A-Child – orphaned children and deserving pupils fully or partially sponsored by PFI and PASAR employees of their tuition, other school expenses, uniforms and food allowances.
PFI-COPPER Union Scholarship – 25 grade 7 to 4th year students who are dependents of PASAR associates (Rank & File) employees are beneficiaries of fix monthly financial support from the foundation for their school needs.
PFI-Sanctus Vincensus Scholarship Foundation (SVSF) – A special partnership with SVSF of Ormoc for deserving poor college students taking up BS Education courses. The scholars will teach at LIDE Learning Center Inc. (LLCI), a partner school of PFI, after graduation.
Metallurgical Engineering Scholarship Grant – Education assistance for deserving third year students at UP Diliman and MSU-IIT at Iligan City to ensure that they will finish the course and then find work in PASAR.
Another form of assistance is the giving of solar lamps to bright kids who does not have electricity connections at home, especially those living in the uplands and mountain areas.
Literacy Improvement in Math, English & Science (LIMES)
The project, conceptualized by the local teachers, aims to improve the achievement of public students in the 3 tool subjects by enhancing their interest and raising their literacy and numeracy skills in English, Math and Science through non-classroom supplementary learning activities. It is implemented throughout the school year by the LIMES team composed of local stakeholders and school administrators. Major components include Science Summit, Math Challenge and English Fair that are held during the month as designated by the Department of Education. Various activities are lined up under each component like quiz bee, poster making, scrap art, environmental quiz, tugsayawit, robotics, da math, sci-dama, spelling, oratorical contest, declamation, storytelling, team reading, oral reading interpretation and learn-to-read, read-to-learn month long sessions. The project also sponsors in and out-of-town teacher trainings as well as provincial and regional camps, conferences and forum related to the three subjects.
Batang Isabel, Batang Okay (BIBO)
A project for children in school in support to DepEd’s medical and dental program to address problems on nutrition and dental health of public pupils. Components are School Supplementary Feeding and Medical and Dental Outreach in schools.
Under the school supplemental feeding, PFI partnered with Jollibee Group Foundation to implement the Busog, Lusog, Talino feeding activity in the 5 public schools of Isabel. PFI also partnered with several suppliers of PASAR such as Toyota Motors Tacloban to cover 250 severely wasted and wasted pupils in another 3 public schools in Isabel for the 120 day feeding activity.
